i have this habit of reading stale news....and while i was rummaging through the sunday times' Life, i saw this article by Richard Lim, "Do not let Islam be hijacked".
"THIS may come as a surprise to many, including the few parents who insisted that their pre-pubescent daughters wear the tudung to their primary schools: There is nothing in the Koran that says all women must be veiled or be secluded in a separate part of the house. What the Koran does prescribe is some degree of veiling and seclusion for the Prophet's wives only. The veiling and seclusion of women were adopted by Muslims some three or four generations after the death of Prophet Muhammad, and even then, these customs were copied from the Greek Christians of Byzantium, who had long veiled and segregated their women...."

Nowadays we see so many non-muslims and muslims alike condemning acts of terrorism and trying to explain what Islam is all about. i too believe that every religion promotes tolerance and appreciates the gift of life...but what mr Lim has said that the hijab is only for the Prophet's (pbuh) wives only is totally absurd. Are you saying that millions of Muslims have misintepreted the Quran wrongly? The Prophet said: "A girl who has attained puberty should cover up her whole body except her face and hands." Tell me one thing, Mr Lim....tell me one ayah in de Qur'an that teaches the Muslims how to pray.
juz for everyone's info.....Muslims use the Quran and the Hadith in formulating the Islamic law and their teachings of Islam. To intepret(tafseer) the Quran, one needs to have a strong knowledge of the Arabic language firstly. And he must also refer to the Hadith which records the sayings and deeds of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It's farny how a non-Muslim can teach Islam to everyone. yah...it's farny!
